Mummified Monk - Wat Kunaram Temple History, Hua Thanon Koh Samui

The concept of mummifying a monk’s body is quite common in Thailand and in Koh Samui, you will come across many sites where a monk’s body has been mummified and stored.

The most popular mummified monk is at the famous Wat Kunaram, where the body of Dang Piyasilo lies. Dasng Piyasilo devoted the last part of his life to Buddhism and its practices.

Dang Piyasilo was a native of Koh Samui and after enjoying his long and prosperous life, he left home and studied Buddhism when he was 50 years old. At this time, he became a monk and practised several meditation techniques in this small temple. It is also believed that Dang Piyasilo was able to predict his own death through his powerful insight to life.

When he died he was in a meditation position and after his death, his body remained in the same position without decomposition. Thus, his family and disciples decided to restore his body within a glass casket. Even after twenty years, his body is still in the same position and remains relatively unscathed.

Residents of Koh Samui believe that his body is a symbol for the many that follow Buddhist culture and teachings, and Dang Piyasilo is Koh Samui’s most famous mummified monk.
