Getting Around Koh Samui

There are many options for getting around Koh Samui. Hired and private, as well as public transportation choices are available.

Depending on the distance of your destination, as well as your budget, you’ll have plenty of transport options to choose from.

Getting Around Koh Samui, Taxis, Motorbike Hire, Private Cars & Drivers

A songthaew, the local name for a taxi, is the most common means of public transportation on the island. It is essentially a pick-up truck, and its back features a converted bed where passengers can sit. Each bench can fit up to 10 adults, and sometimes a passenger hangs from the rear bumper. Songthaews are equipped with luggage racks on top. These are the cheapest means of public transport on Koh Samui.

Taxis can also be found throughout the island. However, be careful as Koh Samui taxi drivers don’t always use the meter. Once you get in, make sure that you establish a rate with a driver.

Scooter taxis are another cheap and efficient means of transport; they are also much quicker than taxis. These are ideal for solo travellers who are in a hurry and have no problem holding on to a stranger as he drives you to your destination aboard a motorbike.

Booking a private car allows you flexibility in getting around Koh Samui. If you’re feeling adventurous and would like to explore the island on your own for a few days, this is highly recommended. You can see the sights at your own time, without having to share the space with a tour group.

Scooters and motorbikes are popular with tourists, as well as locals. A word of caution though: only use a scooter if you are experienced and skilled. Always wear a helmet since accidents involving scooters are unfortunately a common occurrence.

There is also the option of getting around Koh Samui by foot if the beach or town is near your hotel. Just make sure to stay hydrated and wear sun protection since it can get very hot.
