Sail Rock is regarded by many as the best dive site in the Gulf of Thailand. Known locally as “Hin Bai”, the dive site is located an hour and a half away by boat from Koh Tao, but it’s also accessible from numerous other beaches and islands; including Koh Phangan.

What sets this dive site apart from others is the incredible visibility, the abundance of both small and big fish, and the jaw-dropping scenery underwater.

The dive site is rather deep and divers may experience some strong underwater currents. However, with caution and by scuba diving with small groups, it’s generally safe.

Some of the sights you can expect to see here include massive black corals, moray eels, cup corals, scorpionfish, batfish, snapper, barracuda, schools of jack, queenfish, and much more. But what every diver hopes to experience by coming here is the presence of the majestic whale shark. Macro enthusiasts will also love this dive site for the many nudibranchs, crabs, and shrimps that are easily found here.

The maximum depth of this dive site is just a little over 40 meters. However, the actual rock well goes down 20 meters, and this is where it meets the ocean floor. Divers should also look out for another large rock, but this one doesn’t reach the surface. It’s located southeast of the dive site and reaches down to the sand over 30 meters. There are also many small rocks scattered around the main rock.

One unique aspect of the Sail Rock dive site is that it lets you descend into an actual rock. Known as the chimney, this underwater area poses a fun buoyancy challenge even for advanced scuba divers.

Many tour operators in Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan offer day trips, taking scuba divers to the premier dive site of Thailand. Don’t miss out on this incredible underwater kingdom!
