Wat Khao Tham

Wat Khao Tham is an international meditation centre developed by a Thai Buddhist nun named Mae Chee Ahmon.

The meditation centre is a great place for residents as well as international travellers looking for a spot in Koh Phangan to practice Buddhist meditation.

The centre specialises in multiple-day meditation retreats focused on calming the mind and learning how to connect with the present moment. They offer programs that are suitable for busy people who have difficulties taking time out. What’s great about the meditation centre is that they cater to international travellers; occasionally they even hold meditation retreats held in different languages such as Russian.

Aside from meditation, vipassana (silent) retreats are also available. Depending on the package or type of program you’d like to participate in, they all have varying fees and most already include accommodation and meals. Regardless of which program you choose at Wat Khao Tham, everything is conducted by an experienced meditation teacher.

When participating at a retreat, visitors need to keep in mind that there is an appropriate dress code. All must wear loose-fitting and modest clothing for the duration of the retreat. The midriff, chest, and shoulders should always be covered. Yoga pants, as well as tight shirts and pants, are not allowed. Shoes that can easily be removed, such as sandals or flip flops, are recommended.

The food provided during the retreat is ovo-lacto vegetarian, which means that milk and eggs are used. Local spices, including chilli are also used in cooking. Retreat participants who have special dietary needs are advised to contact the kitchen staff ahead of time.

If you are interested in participating in a meditation retreat in one of Thailand’s most beautiful areas, look no further than the Wat Khao Tham. It is located above the Baan Tai town area, amongst forested hills on Koh Phangan Island.
